Working on Fluke 0.2
Posted: August 27th, 2009 | Author: mitjak | Filed under: uncategorized | 150 Comments »
I’ve started to add a few new features to Fluke, and the 0.2b is now available.
I’m in need of testers so if you feel like devoting a bit of time to test Fluke out, let me know in the comments or at dmitry at blowintopieces dot com.
Thanks!

This newer version of Fluke worked perfectly and extremely quick. The instructions posted are simple and precise. Excellent converter.

I will help you.

it used to qwork perfectly. since i installed SL it doesn’t. i get failed! messages. the .flac files are fine. when i try to import a .flac i’d already imported i get the same result…
Reply
I have the same issues. I’m working on that and a few other problems. Fluke 0.2.2 should be out soon.
Reply
This works great on 10.5.8.
Dude, I had stoped using it because of the track number thing, now I’m back!
One point, after adding to iTunes I convert to Apple lossless and delete the original FLACs (I want to copy the music to my ipod). If FLUKE had a FLAC2Lossless feature, it would save me a couple of steps. But I’m lazy!
This does not need to be done by Fluke, it’s nice as it is now. Though you could charge a few bucks for this “pro feature” (add the automatic download of album artwork and I’m sold!)
MANY THANKS!!!

Ahoy,
I’m not sure if you’ve looked into the Issues sections on the google project page or if you’ve just read my mind but I’ve actually planned that out as the next feature.
I know it’s not very FLAC friendly and really, it can be viewed from the perspective of driving people away from a good free format and towards a proprietary one, but too many of us have iPods.
Ultimately, it would be nice if iTunes allowed you to keep multiple versions of a file, one for mobile devices and iPods and one for quality listening but with the storage space getting cheaper by the day I don’t think we’re going to have that see the light of day.
Hence, conversion to Apple Lossless is the only real solution I myself see as well.

Awesome tool! Just what I needed to combine two music libraries into one. Thanks!
Reply
Hi, thanks for the great tool! I’m trying out the new version and it seems that with certain FLACs, it messes up some tag changing related behavior. For example, iTunes allows me to modify the album name for one track and displays the change, but when this track is played, the album name reverts to the original. Oddly, this affects only some tracks.
Reply
Same problem here. I change the tags and when it is played, it all reverts. I had to convert to apple lossless.
Reply
@unused
I have not encountered that issue yet as iTunes stops referencing the FLACs for metadata as soon as you change any tag (it keeps it in the library so the tags FLACs have are still stored in the file itself).
What sort of album is it, and where are the flacs located, i.e. do you store everything on the Macintosh HD and let iTunes copy everything into its own library, or do you keep it on an external drive?
Also, assuming you and I dont tell anybody, and I’m sure the law won’t read this page — would it be possible to shoot one of those tracks over to me so I can see if I can reproduce the problem?
Reply
Thank you for putting this together, and putting it on the web. I needed this to listen to some downloaded music files, and now I am rockin’ to the tunes !

I just updated my mac with the snow leopard OS and Fluke no longer works. Will there be an upgrade any time soon?

The problem is related to python, as SL updated python to 2.6:

Anyone else have issues adding artwork from a file within iTunes? Think I’m having similar problems to unused—files are on my Mac’s HD and set to not copy over to /iTunes Music/.
Besides this, newest version seems to be working fine on SL for me.
Reply
@Penguiner
I’m working on the “one by one” issue right now.
As to the artwork, iTunes sees FLACs as QuickTime Movies due to how the Xiph library works, and movies are not supposed to have artwork according to iTunes. I tried a number of workarounds but so far the only thing that’s known to work is loading the iTunes Store artwork by tagging the music properly and right-clicking and clicking Get Album Artwork. That’s assuming the album you’re looking for is in the iTunes DB of course.
Reply
Using the latest download in Snow Leopard (0.2.3) and it works perfectly for QuickView playing and playing within Quicktime. This is the main thing I was looking for so I haven’t tested within iTunes.
Thanks for saving me from having to open VLC every time I want to preview a FLAC file.

@imissmyjuno
Ahh, that explains it. That also might explain why Plex is having issues with reading the album art from the iTunes database file.
Besides a recent bugfix release, XiphQT development looks kind of dead. Guess Apple is going to make me convert everything to ALAC …

Hey there,
Thanks for this cool little piece of software.
I upgraded to Snow Leopard recently on my 2009 Mac Pro and noticed that your old Fluke no longer worked. I’ve just upgraded to Fluke 0.2.4b and it seems to be working.
When I initially played my newly imported files (using Fluke 0.2.4b) a couple of them skipped a few times as they were playing. But I tried playing the tracks that skipped again and was unable to replicate the issue, so not sure what that was about.
Anyway, thanks again.

Is it normal that we can’t use artwork album in flac?

Hello,
I could not get Fluke 0.2 to work with OS 10.6.1. I will try installing 0.11 again…

Running 10.6 and iTunes 9 and having some trouble. Everything worked fine until the iTunes 9 upgrade.
When I drag some flac files onto the Fluke icon, I get a “do you wish to add” dialog, and when I click yes, I get the window with all the command line stuff but it says failed after every track.
Anyone else?
Only unusual thing about my setup is that my library is stored remotely on a NAS, but this has not been a problem in the past.
Reply
@Tim
Is access to your NAS read-only? If so it will be a problem as Fluke needs to flag your files before adding them to iTunes. I’ll file a bug for this as it’s come up a few times already.
Reply
I have a question, I used FLUKE for the first time today, transfered files to Itunes, everything was fine up until burning the music to CD, it said “no files to burn in playlist”. Okay, why doesn’t it let me burn it if I can obviously play it. ROXIO allows you to burn FLAC, so why can’t Itunes? Why doesn’t it just do its job and just burn it, since I can play it? Whats going on here?
Reply
@Gary
Use Toast or convert to Apple Lossless — you can’t burn your FLACs with Fluke and that’s just because of how it works.
Reply
thanks, but i havent tried toast before? is it easy, ill give it a try. I’m pretty new at MAC so I’m not sure how to convert to Apple Lossless. But I guess I’ll give toast a try thanks!
Reply
@Gary
Sorry — I thought when you said Roxio you meant Toast and I’m not certain whether Toast can burn FLACs either. If you don’t have very many songs you could always convert the songs once imported into iTunes as well.

Just wanted to let you know this doesn’t open with 10.4 at all. I’ve had troubles with the last version of Fluke on 10.4 so hopefully this new update might work at some point in the future.

Glad you find it useful. Does the error happen with all or some flacs? That exception is supposed to be thrown if the file you’re processing isn’t a valid flac file.
Reply
@Mijtak
NAS is not read-only. I did a test where I tried to use Fluke to add to my local library and found that I had the same problem.
I’ve traced the problem to the particular tracks I was trying to add. They are FLAC files downloaded from the internet. I’ve tried adding some old files that I had ripped myself with mixed success. Some worked and some didn’t. I’m at a bit of a loss.
Reply
@Tim
There seems to be some variation in success indeed. What sort of error are you getting if you try 0.2.5? Also, what sort of FLACs are they? Any chance I could get my hands on one of them?

Hi there,
I’ve got exactly the same issue than Tim. My setup is a simple IMAC using internal hard drive to store the flac files, not NAS
I had Fluke + Itunes 8 + Leopard and everything worked fine. Then upgraded to Snow Leopard, Itunes 9, tried to import flac but it failed. Upgraded fluke to last version 2.5b but it’s still failing.

I installed Fluke 0.2.5b and with a flac file got the same message as thechaser above, September 16, with NameError: global name `filename’ is not defined.

I just installed the latest beta and I cannot get it to work. I am running 10.6 and iTunes 9. Everything seems to be working fine, but the command line shows failed and the file doesn’t show up in iTunes.

I cannot drop folders, just selected files. Was that normal? Using leopard and itunes 8.

@mitjak
So I got things sort of working. I ran the Fluke Uninstaller and then installed 025b. I can now import, but occasionally Fluke gets tripped up at adding the track numbers stage. Not a huge deal.. glad the track numbers thing works at all.
While I’m at it, I suppose I should mention the huge problem I have always had with Fluke. I often can not play my imported flac files in iTunes. Usually, they will play immediately after import, but if I’ve restarted iTunes or put my computer to sleep they won’t. No error message, just nothing happening when I double click a track. This only seems to occur with my library being stored on the NAS. My local library plays Fluke-imported flacs just fine.
I mostly play my music through a Squeeze Box, so this hasn’t been completely debilitating. Still, it would be quite nice to get it fixed.

Brand new to this whole MacWorld and .flac style of saving my music and I am loving it … Thanks to the Fluke team. Just started using this on Leopard with iTunes9 and it is working well. I didnt try dragging files into Fluke but will comment on my next rip. I am just wondering … instead of saving all my music on the Mac itself … is there a way I can just save it to my external drive so as not to kill space?
Reply
@Tim
Never had this issue before but I suppose I ought to try a nas.
@ExtinctKarma
In the iTunes preferences (under advanced I think) you can set the location of the library. Set that to your external drive, and then look up Consolidate library in the help file – it’ll move all your existing tracks to the new location.

Try running the uninstall script, then install the latest beta. This seems to fix the issue.

I’m using iTunes 9 on MBP with Snow Leopard and Fluke works great. If I copy a file to my desktop it shows up with an iTunes icon and FLAC in the icon. Double click, iTunes open and I can play the song. Perfect.
I have tons of FLAC files on my home network that I usually stream using Simplify Media which iTunes also recognizes. But this is the first time I’ve been able to play a .flac file that I’ve copied to my desktop.
Anything need testing? Let me know. I’ve very interested in FLAC for Mac because most of the concerts I download are in FLAC.
Cheers, Eric.

I found a 10.4 machine specifically for this purpose, and it doesnt work. There is a next major release planned soon and I’ll recompile fluke under 10.4 for Tiger users specifically.
All of that will be once I take care of the midterms that is.

I would love to see you work on just a simple Quicklook plugin, I don’t really use FLAC for anything on my own system, but anything that you get lossless usually comes in FLAC format, which is great, as it does a great job with file sizes. I would love to be able to quickly preview those files, just like I would any other audio file on my Mac, I am sure this is possible in some form.
Please let me know if this is something you may look into!

Is possible to have CUE Sheet support too??

Nifty bit of software, thanks for the time & trouble getting it all working…
I just wish it would have Album Art support, whatever I do in iTunes with the FLAC file (retagging, manual addition) it will not show the album art.
Is this just a limitation of the way that it plays / handles the FLAC files in iTunes or is there a sure fire way of getting the art to appear please?
Thanks again

Thanks for the app – but, I just downloaded and then ran Fluke on a 135mb flac file. Fluke ripped it into iTunes, but when I play the file it is deafeningly loud and sounds as though it is playing in slow motion, under water. By slow I mean about 1/4 speed. Any ideas?
I am using SL 10.6.1, iTunes 9.0.1 on a Mac Pro… Also the converted file is labelled “Quicktime movie file” in iTunes

@Justin
Fluke doesn’t support playback of anything other than 44KHz/16bit files. It’s a recurring problem, and I’ll put up some sort of warning message about it when I get a chance as it’s nothing I can fix up at the moment (a limitation of the library Fluke uses).

Installed 0.2b, Dragged flacs to the flac icon and the songs now are in iTunes. However, I cannot burn them to a cd? When I try to burn, i get a message saying there is nothing to burn, and that I need to check the boxes next to songs in the playlist I want to Burn. The boxes are checked. Does Fluke a cutually convert the Flacs to MP3’s or just allow iTunes to play Flacs?.

Worked great!

Instead of dragging just files to the Fluke icon,- it would be nice to be able to drag folders (with sub-folders)..

Should I uninstall all versions of Fluke? If so, how?

I can’t add artwork to my iTunes files anymore. There was an update today, but I don’t know if that’s what’s causing it or not. Any advice?

Hi -
I installed Fluke on my new iMac, Snow Leopard, iTunes 9.
Works great, but I cannot send the music to my AirPort Express – it will only play through my speakers. Can this be fixed?
Thanks!!

Same problem as Mattrix above. It’s just crashing as soon as I try and add any file – and appears to be deleting the files too, when it’s failed to add them.

Fluke just quits and literally does nothing (or so it seems) on Snow Leopard 10.6. Machine used: iMac 3.06GHz

Crashes when opening on iMac running 10.5.8. 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
The previous version worked when I could figure out how to do it. If I clicked on “run” it would quit. If I clicked on “quit” it would quit. seems it sometimes worked and sometimes didn’t. But this version won’t even open.
Thanks for fluke, though, it’s something we need. Maybe I’m doing something wrong, who knows.

Also, everyone please let apple know you want native FLAC support:
http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html
It’s their proprietary program and nobody should have to bend over backwards like this shoehorning a common format into iTunes.

Josh: Agreed. I am submitting it. However, I don’t know how much I am betting on this actually happening. I hope it does though.

Would be nice indeed. Something tells me it might take Apple a few more years to start caring though.

After installing Fluke 0.2.5 (with iTunes 9.0.1 and OSX 10.5.8) and selecting Fluke as the program to open .flac files I received this error message (when double clicking a .flac file):
Fluke Error
An unexpected error has occurred during execution of the main script
ItunesReferenceError: Supplied argument is not a valid iTunes track.

tracknumbers work fine, but “totaltracks”, “discnumber” and “totaldiscs” from my flac files seem to be ignored. especially the last both would be important for itunes to recognize double-CDs.

That sounds like a useful feature to have, I’ll put it up on the todo.
And just a shout out to everyone — I’m listening and writing everything down. There is a load of work at the university to finish however so I simply haven’t got a break long enough to do anything significant as far as work on Fluke is concerned.

Hello everyone,
Just installed the beta version of Fluke (0.2, I guess) and like for other users, iTunes detects (files are not greyed out and are actually clickable) FLAC files, but when I click on the “Choose” button, nothing happens.
Keep up the good work.
Cheers to all.

Latest version is working great here. 10.6.1 with itunes 9.0.1
It would be very nice to have a script that went over all the flac tracks in an itunes library and updated the track number.

iTunes 9.0.2 on 10.6.2
Playback is fine internal to the computer, but when attempting to playback using an aTV on the network as an external output device (output options at the lower right of the iTunes main screen), audio instead continues to come from computer speakers.
Songs also do not show up through aTV when accessing shared libraries.

itunes will not load them, script runs fine. click yes, not a thing happens to my itunes library.

I could not get fluke to work as I installed the earlier version first then the beta…so I uninstalled using the uninstaller from the beta version then reinstalled again and now it works fine. This might work for you too.

Hi,
I can’t get Fluke to add FLACs anymore.
It used to work fine. I reinstalled latest beta but to no avail.
I haven’t used Fluke for a while so i suspect some OsX updates may have make it failed.
OS 10.6.2 + latest iTunes.
thanks for this, it’s great!

Getting the same error on iTunes / SL 10.6.2 as already reported above – but – files are imported perfectly into the latest iTunes. Message pops up but import continues in the back.

I use iTunes / SL 10.6.2 and had the same errors as reported above.
I changed the privilege (in the file info) of the Flac files from Read Only to Read & Write and that seams to do the trick.

works perfectly on my 10.6.2 hackintosh, .11 stopped working for me after i updated from 10.5

Hey,
Something’s weird when using Fluke with mono .flacs. For some reason, they are significantly louder then the equivalent stereo version.
Reply
Not sure if this is it; but another Audio file converter I use automatically lowers levels by -6 dB when mixing two track stereo into one track, I think adding the channels together raises the level and risks cliping. I don’t know if that’s what Fluke is doing, I haven’t used it yet (but wait til my Beatles USB FLAC files arrive tomorrow!).

Awesome! Works like a charm. Thanks

I get to the point where it asks me about the import, I click yes, a window shows in a flash second and then …. nothing. Didn’t do anything, Fluke not open anymore. I’m using OS 10.4 Sry for being girl and newfag and aw, wanted to tell you anyway

Works amazing conversion wise. Is there any way to get album art attached or manually added afterwards? Been trying for a bit with no luck. Anybody get album art to work after converting .flac into iTunes?
Reply
Flac .2 is amazing! Thank you for all your hard work and for supporting track numbers.

This works for playing the FLAC files in iTunes, but when I go to burn the playlist to disc, iTunes tells me that I don’t have anything to burn–apparently it can’t export the files to audio format like it can with regular iTunes format–bummer. Sounds great when the FLAC files are just played in iTunes, though…

It doesn’t work on 10.6 and/or iTunes 9?
I can get nothing with it.

just tried it and loved how it titled all of my tracks in iTunes, but it’s organizing the tracks alpabetically, not by track # (this is from a Phish show from etree). that doesn’t do me any good. am i missing something?
also, when i tried uninstalling, the terminal asked for a password. nothing that should have worked did, and it timed out after 3 attempts. i repeated it to the same effect, but have no idea if it actually worked at uninstalling or not.

Uninstaller/Password recognition!?
Work on PowerBook G4 under 10.5.8
Wanted to first uninstall old fluke version.
But uninstaller told me my password is wrong!? (I know it is correct!) However, when I just hit the enter key without password it seems to have done the required uninstall process!?
The terminal looked like this:
This will uninstall Fluke. Press any key to continue..
Deleting Fluke and its libraries…

Having difficulty importing Beatles USB flac tracks into itunes with OSX 10.5.8 and itunes 9. Any suggestions?

You rock for throwing this together. So user-friendly and definitely way better than having to convert FLAC to WAV and then WAV to AAC. Well done!

I am seriously impressed. Fluke 0.2.5b works flawlessly and fast on my Intel iMac running Snow Leopard 10.6.2. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I’ve uninstalled the beta and rolled back to 0.11 – which works great.
Will wait until you’ve ironed out the bugs. Let me know if you require any help with testing.

Fluke 0.2.5b works fine on my Mac (i7 920) under Snow Leopard 10.6.2. Thanks!
For bonus points, could you import the files in sorted order, so they show up nicely in the “Recently Added” playlist (assuming your FLACs are named with leading track numbers)?
Thanks very much for this great utility! I have donated a little money and I urge other satisfied users to do the same.

Hello,
First of all, thanks for the app, it’s working great!
One very small concern: I don’t seem to be able to change genres on flac files, the tags won’t budge from “a cappella”… and when I’m listening to an Iron Maiden live gig, it feels kind of weird
Thanks again!

Hi,
Application is great!
But there is one problem – I can’t change in iTunes track name or artist

Fluke 0.2.5 is running well on my Macbook Pro with OS X 10.6.2 and iTunes 9.0.2. One thing I liked: if I change the FLAC tags, they get updated automatically in iTunes when I replay the file. FLAC tags that aren’t showing in iTunes: ‘Year’, ‘Album Artist’, compilation (Y/N), and track total (i.e. iTunes shows track 1 but not 1 of 20). Otherwise, everything is working seamlessly. Thanks so much for your efforts.

It doesn’t work with iTune 9.03!

Please fix it soon thank you

Works fine in iTunes 9.0.3 on my Macbook, FYI. As for my tag complaints above, I now realize iTunes is only showing the ‘basic’ FLAC tags and I can accept that limitation.

Hi!
I just installed 0.2.5 of Fluke however when I try to open it nothing happens. Actually, it looks like it opens then closes very, very quickly.
I’m running iTunes 9.0.3 and OSX 10.6.2
Hope this helps!

@Nick
Normally you’d want to open FLAC files with Fluke rather than opening Fluke first. I’m working on a GUI to let you browse to the files though.
@Philip
Tag support is quite incomplete with FLAC at the moment. That appears to be a limitation of the libraries that Fluke uses which I at the moment don’t have control over.
To everyone else — I have a major rewrite planne for this thing. I should have more free time coming up towards the summer as the midterms are killing right now! Thanks for all your support guys!

Ah! Lo and behold, dragging the .flac file onto Fluke works. For some reason I had it in my head that I used to work from inside Fluke.
Sorry about that. Thanks very much!

Having a problem – every time I add a FLAC file it says “Error 5000″ – console log below.
