Working on Fluke 0.2

Posted: August 27th, 2009 | Author: mitjak | Filed under: uncategorized | 150 Comments »

FlukeIcon_128I’ve started to add a few new features to Fluke, and the 0.2b is now available.

I’m in need of testers so if you feel like devoting a bit of time to test Fluke out, let me know in the comments or at dmitry at blowintopieces dot com.

Thanks!

    This works great on 10.5.8.
Dude, I had stoped using it because of the track number thing, now I’m back!
One point, after adding to iTunes I convert to Apple lossless and delete the original FLACs (I want to copy the music to my ipod). If FLUKE had a FLAC2Lossless feature, it would save me a couple of steps. But I’m lazy!
This does not need to be done by Fluke, it’s nice as it is now. Though you could charge a few bucks for this “pro feature” (add the automatic download of album artwork and I’m sold!)

    MANY THANKS!!!

    Ahoy,

I’m not sure if you’ve looked into the Issues sections on the google project page or if you’ve just read my mind but I’ve actually planned that out as the next feature.

I know it’s not very FLAC friendly and really, it can be viewed from the perspective of driving people away from a good free format and towards a proprietary one, but too many of us have iPods.

Ultimately, it would be nice if iTunes allowed you to keep multiple versions of a file, one for mobile devices and iPods and one for quality listening but with the storage space getting cheaper by the day I don’t think we’re going to have that see the light of day.

Hence, conversion to Apple Lossless is the only real solution I myself see as well.

Hi, thanks for the great tool! I’m trying out the new version and it seems that with certain FLACs, it messes up some tag changing related behavior. For example, iTunes allows me to modify the album name for one track and displays the change, but when this track is played, the album name reverts to the original. Oddly, this affects only some tracks.

    Reply

Same problem here. I change the tags and when it is played, it all reverts. I had to convert to apple lossless.

  9. 9 imissmyjuno said at 2:32 pm on August 31st, 2009:

    @unused
I have not encountered that issue yet as iTunes stops referencing the FLACs for metadata as soon as you change any tag (it keeps it in the library so the tags FLACs have are still stored in the file itself).

What sort of album is it, and where are the flacs located, i.e. do you store everything on the Macintosh HD and let iTunes copy everything into its own library, or do you keep it on an external drive?

Also, assuming you and I dont tell anybody, and I’m sure the law won’t read this page — would it be possible to shoot one of those tracks over to me so I can see if I can reproduce the problem?

I’m working on the “one by one” issue right now.

As to the artwork, iTunes sees FLACs as QuickTime Movies due to how the Xiph library works, and movies are not supposed to have artwork according to iTunes. I tried a number of workarounds but so far the only thing that’s known to work is loading the iTunes Store artwork by tagging the music properly and right-clicking and clicking Get Album Artwork. That’s assuming the album you’re looking for is in the iTunes DB of course.

Thanks for saving me from having to open VLC every time I want to preview a FLAC file.

Ahh, that explains it. That also might explain why Plex is having issues with reading the album art from the iTunes database file.

Besides a recent bugfix release, XiphQT development looks kind of dead. Guess Apple is going to make me convert everything to ALAC …

Thanks for this cool little piece of software.

I upgraded to Snow Leopard recently on my 2009 Mac Pro and noticed that your old Fluke no longer worked. I’ve just upgraded to Fluke 0.2.4b and it seems to be working.

When I initially played my newly imported files (using Fluke 0.2.4b) a couple of them skipped a few times as they were playing. But I tried playing the tracks that skipped again and was unable to replicate the issue, so not sure what that was about.

    Anyway, thanks again.

Is access to your NAS read-only? If so it will be a problem as Fluke needs to flag your files before adding them to iTunes. I’ll file a bug for this as it’s come up a few times already.

I have a question, I used FLUKE for the first time today, transfered files to Itunes, everything was fine up until burning the music to CD, it said “no files to burn in playlist”. Okay, why doesn’t it let me burn it if I can obviously play it. ROXIO allows you to burn FLAC, so why can’t Itunes? Why doesn’t it just do its job and just burn it, since I can play it? Whats going on here?

Sorry — I thought when you said Roxio you meant Toast and I’m not certain whether Toast can burn FLACs either. If you don’t have very many songs you could always convert the songs once imported into iTunes as well.

NAS is not read-only. I did a test where I tried to use Fluke to add to my local library and found that I had the same problem.

I’ve traced the problem to the particular tracks I was trying to add. They are FLAC files downloaded from the internet. I’ve tried adding some old files that I had ripped myself with mixed success. Some worked and some didn’t. I’m at a bit of a loss.

So I got things sort of working. I ran the Fluke Uninstaller and then installed 025b. I can now import, but occasionally Fluke gets tripped up at adding the track numbers stage. Not a huge deal.. glad the track numbers thing works at all.

While I’m at it, I suppose I should mention the huge problem I have always had with Fluke. I often can not play my imported flac files in iTunes. Usually, they will play immediately after import, but if I’ve restarted iTunes or put my computer to sleep they won’t. No error message, just nothing happening when I double click a track. This only seems to occur with my library being stored on the NAS. My local library plays Fluke-imported flacs just fine.

I mostly play my music through a Squeeze Box, so this hasn’t been completely debilitating. Still, it would be quite nice to get it fixed.

In the iTunes preferences (under advanced I think) you can set the location of the library. Set that to your external drive, and then look up Consolidate library in the help file – it’ll move all your existing tracks to the new location.

I would love to see you work on just a simple Quicklook plugin, I don’t really use FLAC for anything on my own system, but anything that you get lossless usually comes in FLAC format, which is great, as it does a great job with file sizes. I would love to be able to quickly preview those files, just like I would any other audio file on my Mac, I am sure this is possible in some form.

Please let me know if this is something you may look into!

I just wish it would have Album Art support, whatever I do in iTunes with the FLAC file (retagging, manual addition) it will not show the album art.

Is this just a limitation of the way that it plays / handles the FLAC files in iTunes or is there a sure fire way of getting the art to appear please?

    Thanks again

Fluke doesn’t support playback of anything other than 44KHz/16bit files. It’s a recurring problem, and I’ll put up some sort of warning message about it when I get a chance as it’s nothing I can fix up at the moment (a limitation of the library Fluke uses).

Playback is fine internal to the computer, but when attempting to playback using an aTV on the network as an external output device (output options at the lower right of the iTunes main screen), audio instead continues to come from computer speakers.

Songs also do not show up through aTV when accessing shared libraries.

    Hi,

I can’t get Fluke to add FLACs anymore.
It used to work fine. I reinstalled latest beta but to no avail.

I haven’t used Fluke for a while so i suspect some OsX updates may have make it failed.

    OS 10.6.2 + latest iTunes.

    thanks for this, it’s great!

I changed the privilege (in the file info) of the Flac files from Read Only to Read & Write and that seams to do the trick.

    Hey,

Something’s weird when using Fluke with mono .flacs. For some reason, they are significantly louder then the equivalent stereo version.

    Reply

Not sure if this is it; but another Audio file converter I use automatically lowers levels by -6 dB when mixing two track stereo into one track, I think adding the channels together raises the level and risks cliping. I don’t know if that’s what Fluke is doing, I haven’t used it yet (but wait til my Beatles USB FLAC files arrive tomorrow!).

This works for playing the FLAC files in iTunes, but when I go to burn the playlist to disc, iTunes tells me that I don’t have anything to burn–apparently it can’t export the files to audio format like it can with regular iTunes format–bummer. Sounds great when the FLAC files are just played in iTunes, though…

also, when i tried uninstalling, the terminal asked for a password. nothing that should have worked did, and it timed out after 3 attempts. i repeated it to the same effect, but have no idea if it actually worked at uninstalling or not.

I’ve uninstalled the beta and rolled back to 0.11 – which works great.

Will wait until you’ve ironed out the bugs. Let me know if you require any help with testing.

Fluke 0.2.5b works fine on my Mac (i7 920) under Snow Leopard 10.6.2. Thanks!

For bonus points, could you import the files in sorted order, so they show up nicely in the “Recently Added” playlist (assuming your FLACs are named with leading track numbers)?

Thanks very much for this great utility! I have donated a little money and I urge other satisfied users to do the same.

    Hello,
First of all, thanks for the app, it’s working great!
One very small concern: I don’t seem to be able to change genres on flac files, the tags won’t budge from “a cappella”… and when I’m listening to an Iron Maiden live gig, it feels kind of weird :)
    Thanks again!

But there is one problem – I can’t change in iTunes track name or artist :(

Fluke 0.2.5 is running well on my Macbook Pro with OS X 10.6.2 and iTunes 9.0.2. One thing I liked: if I change the FLAC tags, they get updated automatically in iTunes when I replay the file. FLAC tags that aren’t showing in iTunes: ‘Year’, ‘Album Artist’, compilation (Y/N), and track total (i.e. iTunes shows track 1 but not 1 of 20). Otherwise, everything is working seamlessly. Thanks so much for your efforts.

Works fine in iTunes 9.0.3 on my Macbook, FYI. As for my tag complaints above, I now realize iTunes is only showing the ‘basic’ FLAC tags and I can accept that limitation.

    Hi!
I just installed 0.2.5 of Fluke however when I try to open it nothing happens. Actually, it looks like it opens then closes very, very quickly.

    I’m running iTunes 9.0.3 and OSX 10.6.2

    Hope this helps!

    @Nick
Normally you’d want to open FLAC files with Fluke rather than opening Fluke first. I’m working on a GUI to let you browse to the files though.
    @Philip
Tag support is quite incomplete with FLAC at the moment. That appears to be a limitation of the libraries that Fluke uses which I at the moment don’t have control over.

To everyone else — I have a major rewrite planne for this thing. I should have more free time coming up towards the summer as the midterms are killing right now! Thanks for all your support guys!

Ah! Lo and behold, dragging the .flac file onto Fluke works. For some reason I had it in my head that I used to work from inside Fluke.

Sorry about that. Thanks very much!
